Day 2 – Arrowtown to Wanaka
About the Stage Sponsor
The Helicopter Line support Tour of New Zealand. Their pilots will fly our camera crews to grab shots of riders amongst the spectacular South Island mountains and lakes that will tantalize our Sky TV audiences. Don’t go past The Helicopter Line for your next ride in paradise.
Millions of visitors each year walk the historic streets of this little village of Arrowtown with cameras to hand, few however ride out of it, determined to conquer the mountain pass ahead.
This is one of the most dramatic rides in New Zealand, indeed the switchbacks of the Alps de Huez will come to mind. It is no disgrace if the heart rate gets up there, to have a “compulsory stop” (and take a photo or two) on a couple of the steeper sections…
This ride will live in your memory for ever.
Riders may choose to ride from their hotel to the start at Arrowtown. The Crown Range ahead is a serious climb beginning with a number of zig zags to the Terrace and then a full frontal attack on the South Western face over the highest public Road in New Zealand. Wind and colder temperatures can prevail so warm clothing should be carried or worn. The summit gives way to a fast downhill past the historic Cardrona Hotel and onto the shores of Lake Wanaka.
