Stage Map & Elevation
Flat roads today but the stage end provides an opportunity to visit this unique little town.
The West Coast of New Zealand is untouched, unspoilt and not on everyone’s travel plans. Mining of Gold and Coal the West Coast, so rich in minerals but also rich in fascinating stories of hard case mining families that cheerfully survive isolation and bucket loads of weather rolling in over the Pacific Ocean. The mouth of the Grey River is a must-visit. Upriver the Grey River provides shelter for the fishing fleet, but the entry over the bar has claimed many lives and wrecked boats trying to make the desperate run for shelter and being rolled by the huge seas. Before boarding the Tranz Alpine a town tour by bike, a bite of lunch and a visit to the River mouth a must.
Special arrangements for support crews to leave Ross after Stage start and drive the spectacular route to Christchurch at leisure to check-in at the night’s accommodation (to be advised) prior to meeting riders at the Christchurch Railway station.
